Dual admission

What is dual admission?

Dual admission means being admitted to more than one award course at the same time. Students require faculty approval to be admitted to more than one award course at a time, except for concurrent diplomas and pre-approved course combinations (see Pre-approved course combinations).

An award course is any certificate, diploma or degree course (including bachelor, master and doctoral degrees).

When is dual admission permitted?

Dual admission is only available to graduate students.

Dual admission is never permitted for two undergraduate courses, except for the combination of a bachelor degree and a concurrent diploma.

How do I request dual admission approval?

To request permission, please use the Dual Admission Application form.

You will be asked for your preferred (primary) course, which is the course you will remain admitted to if your request is not approved. You should also outline reasons for requesting dual admission.

You will be required to provide evidence that your faculty for each course you are enrolled in approves your dual admission, so please ensure you have written evidence of this support before applying. Please note that lecturers, supervisors and heads of school cannot approve dual admission. Only representatives of the Dean can approve dual admission.

I’m intending to take a leave of absence from one course to study another course. Do I still need to apply for dual admission approval?

Yes. While you are on a leave of absence you are still considered admitted to your course and need appropriate approval to study another award course. You must still apply for dual admission approval.

Students admitted to a concurrent diploma do not need dual admission approval but may have other requirements regarding their leave. Please refer to the concurrent diplomas page for more information.

I’m not sure if I need to apply for dual admission. Who should I contact?

If you are unsure whether you need dual admission approval, please submit a Dual Admission Application form. Stop 1 staff will advise you whether you need approval, and if faculty approval is required, can help you get in touch with your Course Coordinators.

Are there any additional requirements I must fulfil if I’m approved for dual admission?

Yes. You must meet the enrolment requirements for each course individually. This means you must be enrolled in at least one subject in each course in each half-year period, or apply for a leave of absence for any half-year period where you do not intend to enrol in subjects.

Additionally, If you intend to study more than 50 points in any semester (or more than 25 points in Summer or Winter term) across both of your courses, you must apply to overload via the Enrolment Assistance Form.

If I’m not approved for dual admission, will I be withdrawn from the additional course?

If you are not approved for dual admission you will be withdrawn from your non-primary course. You will receive a notification with a date that your course will be withdrawn. Any subjects you are enrolled in for that course will also be withdrawn.

What alternatives are there to dual admission?

The University offers a number of course planning resources that can help you get the most out of your course. Use these resources to plan out your next steps. We recommend speaking to a course adviser before applying for admission to an additional course.
