How do I study overseas as part of my course (including exchange)?
Semester or year-long programs
Exchange programs are a result of special arrangements between the University of Melbourne and overseas institutions to 'exchange' a certain number of students.
You may elect to study on exchange for one or two semesters, depending on the agreement with the other institution. You continue to pay your tuition fees to the University of Melbourne.
Where there is no exchange agreement in place, you may undertake a non-partner program. This means you will pay tuition fees directly to your host institution. You need to have your chosen overseas subjects approved by Stop 1 before you go, in order to confirm the credit you'll receive back towards your Melbourne degree on successful completion of the overseas subjects.

Short-term programs
You can choose to study overseas during the summer or winter break as part of your University of Melbourne degree. These opportunities usually last from three to six weeks, and may be offered as exchange or non-partner programs. You need to apply to the University of Melbourne and have your chosen overseas subjects approved by Stop 1 before you go, in order to get an agreement about how much credit you will get. If the program you have in mind is not listed in our website, you may take it as a non-credit activity. Credit will not be transferred to your Melbourne degree.

University of Melbourne Overseas Subjects (UMOS)
Some University of Melbourne subjects allow you to undertake study with a component conducted overseas for credit to your course or to meet a hurdle requirement. These can be actual subjects or clinical placements, internships and travelling studios. You pay your overseas tuition fees to the University of Melbourne. You do, however, need to pay for other costs associated with the travel, such as accommodation, transport, booking charges, meals, etc.
