Short-term overseas study programs
I've been approved for a short-term overseas study program. What happens next?
There are a range of short-term programs available in summer and winter breaks. To find out more and how to apply, visit our Short-term programs page.
Once you have applied and been accepted into the program, you are now required to apply directly to the host institution if you have not already done so. You must liaise directly with the host institution regarding your application. If you have specific questions about your application, contact your host institution. I will be an exchange student. What are my tuition and program fees?
As an exchange student, you will pay your tuition fees directly to the University of Melbourne.
Please visit the Fees webpage to view how your fees are calculated.
While on exchange, you will need to pay other fees such as accommodation, administration, application and orientation fees directly to your host institution. Please visit your institution's entry in the Programs Database for more specific information.
I will be a non-partner student. What are my tuition and program fees?
As a non-partner student, you will pay your tuition fees directly to your host institution.
You will also need to pay other fees such as accommodation, administration, application and orientation fees directly to your host university. Please visit your institution's entry in the Programs Database for more specific information.
What should I do if I have been conditionally approved?
You must ensure that any condition imposed on your approval is met by the time of your acceptance at your host institution.
For any enquiries about your conditional approval, please submit an online enquiry to Stop 1.
Your condition will be removed once you have submitted your host institution acceptance notification as an online enquiry.
Will I need a visa?
It is your responsibility to arrange a visa to attend your overseas program. Please refer to the consulate or embassy of the country you will be visiting for current visa information. For more information, visit our Plan your budget page for more information about passport and visa fees. .
What should I do after I have been accepted to my host institution?
Once you have been accepted by your host institution, please submit your acceptance notification to the University of Melbourne as proof:
- Submit an online enquiry to Stop 1.
- Label the enquiry as 'Acceptance - exchange/non-partner'.
- Include your Student ID and host institution in your enquiry title.
- Select 'Overseas Study' under 'Topic', and then 'Help with my application'.
- Attach a PDF copy of your official acceptance letter. This letter must contain your name and the program dates.

How do I enrol in a 'placeholder' subject?
Within seven working days of submitting your acceptance notification, a component called a placeholder will be added to your study plan to represent your overseas enrolment.
Please check your study plan via my.unimelb after seven working days, to ensure that:
- You have a placeholder enrolment in your study plan before departure, in order to receive credit and payment for any scholarship or funding
- Your enrolment is correct and accurately reflects the number of points you expect to receive from your studies overseas.
If you need any changes to your Placeholder, please submit an online enquiry to request any changes. Please note, you cannot make any changes to this placeholder component after its census date.
If you have been conditionally approved, please note that your placeholder will not be added until you have met your condition(s). For any questions about your conditions, please submit an online enquiry.
Can I change the subjects I will take overseas?
Sometimes you may need to get additional subjects approved for various reasons. To do this, submit a new subject approval via the Overseas Study Planner.

What funding options are available for short-term programs?
If you are a student studying in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), you may be eligible to apply for an OS-HELP loan once you have been enrolled in your placeholder subject.
Note: As you have already applied for an overseas study program through the University of Melbourne, you do not need to submit an Online Mobility Registration and Travel Grant Application form.

How should I organise my travel insurance?
Once you have submitted your host institution acceptance notification, you can register for the University's free travel insurance.

What should I do once I have returned home from my short-term program?
Once you return from your short-term overseas study program, you must submit a hard copy of your transcript (from your overseas institution) in person at
Stop 1 (Parkville) so that your credit can be transferred.
