Resuming the Master of Teaching to complete the final 50 points after having exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching

Can I return to complete my Master of Teaching final 50 points after having exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching?

Master of Teaching (Secondary) and Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) students who exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching are eligible to return within ten years and complete the final 50 points of their course and qualify for the Masters.

Professional Development option

MTeach (Secondary):

Two elective subjects, and the capstones EDUC91015 Professional Learning Capstone.

MTeach (Early Childhood):

Your subject selections may vary depending on the year you exited with your Graduate Diploma. Please contact education-help@unimelb.edu.au for more information before filling out the form.

  • The year you undertook your graduate diploma 

Research option

A grade average of at least 75% in the Graduate Diploma in Teaching is required to be eligible to undertake this option.

Can I study part time?

The final 50 points may be undertaken part time and can be commenced either start-year or mid-year.

Can I study online?

With permission, and depending on subject choice, the Professional Development option may be completed online.
  • A number of elective subjects are available online.
  • Studentswho would like to undertake the entirety of the capstone subject online are asked to contact education-help@unimelb.edu.au to ensure that this can be accommodated.

*students must have obtained a WAM of 75+ in their Graduate Diploma

Please select a total of 50 credit points of electives (normally four subjects).

Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) 
Coursework: Education Research Project (EDUC90759)
PLUS
37.5 credit points of electives from the Master of Teaching electives list or subjects from the Master of Education
Research*: EDUC90419 Education Research Methodology 
PLUS 
EDUC90558 Education Research Design 
*students must have obtained a WAM of 75+ in their Graduate Diploma
If you completed your Graduate Diploma before 2013:
Please select a total of 50 credit points of electives (normally four subjects).

Which electives can I choose from?

  • Master of Education and Master of Teaching elective subjects. Please view the University Handbook for more information about these electives.
  • subjects from one of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education specialist Masters courses for which the student has the prerequisites*
  • a relevant graduate subject from another Faculty/Graduate School for which the student has prerequisites, with permission*
    *students wishing to undertake electives within a specialist Masters course within MGSE, OR an elective from outside of the faculty, must first contact the desired subject’s coordinator and their Master of Teaching coordinator via email to request this permission.

Do I need to have a supervisor and proposal to enrol in the Research Option?

Students enrolling in the Research Option are not required to organise a supervisor or have a research proposal before enrolling in the final 50 points. Students will develop a research proposal with guidance from a supervisor as part of the methodology subject, EDUC90419.

Do I need to complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test?

Students who exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching before July 1, 2016 are not required to complete the test. Students who exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching after 1 July 2016 or later will have completed the test before having exited with the Graduate Diploma in Teaching.
