Resuming the Master of Teaching to complete the final 50 points after having exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching

Can I return to complete my Master of Teaching final 50 points after having exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching?

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (graduating in December 2011 or after) are eligible to return within ten years, and complete the final 50 points of their course and qualify for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) (known as the ‘Final 50’).

Mid-year 2022 will be the last opportunity to make an application to undertake the Final 50. Applications to commence Final 50 from start-year 2023 onwards will not be accepted.

Can I study part time?

The final 50 points may be undertaken part-time and must be commenced no later than mid-year 2022. The Final 50 must be completed no later than the end of 2023.

Can I study online?

Depending on subject choice, the Professional Development option may be completed online. Please refer to the handbook for subject delivery mode and availability. If a subject is offered online, students can enrol into this option.  
Please note that subjects currently offered as an online option in response to the impact of Covid-19 may not continue to run online in future study periods. Please check subject availability carefully. 
  • A number of elective subjects are available online.
  • The Capstone is a January subject and cannot be taken midyear

Please select a total of 50 credit points of electives (normally four subjects).
Please note that the Capstone is a Semester 1 subject with semester- and year-long availabilities and may require until the end of 2023 to complete.
 
Master of Teaching (Early Childhood)

37.5 credit points of electives from the Master of Teaching electives list or subjects from the Master of Education

Which electives can I choose from?

  • Master of Education and Master of Teaching elective subjects. Please view the University Handbook for more information about these electives.
  • subjects from one of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) specialist Masters courses for which the student has met the prerequisites*
  • a relevant graduate subject from another Faculty/Graduate School for which the student has met the prerequisites, with permission*
    *students wishing to undertake electives within a specialist Masters course within MGSE, OR an elective from outside of the faculty, must first contact the desired subject’s coordinator and their Master of Teaching coordinator via email to request this permission.

Do I need to have a supervisor and proposal to enrol in the Research Option?

Students enrolling in the Research Option are not required to organise a supervisor or have a research proposal before enrolling in the final 50 points. Students will develop a research proposal with guidance from a supervisor as part of the methodology subject, EDUC90419.

Do I need to complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test?

Students who exited with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching before July 1, 2016 are not required to complete the LANTITE to register to teach with the VIT.

If a person completed an accredited Victorian ITE program on or after 1 July 2016 (and commenced the ITE program before 1 January 2017), and they graduated from the ITE program without satisfactorily completing LANTITE, they are required to satisfactorily complete the LANTITE as part of their registration requirements in Victoria.

How and when do I apply?

Mid-year 2022 is the final opportunity to undertake the Final 50, and eligible applicants may only undertake available subjects. All applicants enrolling in Final 50 must complete their study no later than the end of 2023.
