Enrolment requirements for coursework students

Find out how to meet your enrolment requirements throughout your degree.

It's important to maintain your enrolment at all times throughout your course to keep the University informed about your study intentions.

You do this by either by enrolling in subjects or taking leave for each half-year period (January to June, July to December) until you have completed your course.

If your enrolment is incomplete, the University will consider you have abandoned your course and your enrolment may be cancelled.

What are enrolment requirements?

  • Domestic students: For each half-year period you must either enrol in at least one subject and have a study load of at least 1 credit point or have an approved leave of absence. If you're studying more than one course (such as a bachelor degree and concurrent diploma), you must fulfil this requirement for each course.
  • International student visa holders: For each half-year period you must enrol in a full-time study load of at least 50 points or have an approved Reduced Study Load (unless you need less than 50 points to complete your course). If you're studying more than one course (such as a bachelor degree and concurrent diploma), you must fulfil this requirement for each course and complete both courses by the end date in your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

What's the difference between enrolment and course requirements?

Your enrolment requirements relate to your obligations as a student and are outlined in your Enrolment Declaration. These include items such as maintaining your enrolment (with either study load or leave), paying your fees and regularly checking your University student email account.

Your course requirements are specific to your course, and are outlined in the University Handbook entry for your course. They include requirements such as subjects that you need to complete, or rules that you need to adhere to, in order to meet your course requirements and be awarded your degree.

Confirm you're properly enrolled

You are responsible for checking your enrolment is complete for all courses you are admitted to by ensuring that you have:

  • Marked all subjects that you plan to take as 'enrolled' and not just 'planned' on your Study Plan
  • Accepted the Enrolment Declaration for the year
  • The required study load, or approved leave or deferral, for each half-year period.

When to enrol

  • New students: Enrol at the start of your course when you receive your offer letter by following the steps in Get Started at Melbourne.
  • Current (continuing) students: Re-enrol during the re-enrolment period each year until your course is complete.

Incomplete enrolment

If you don't meet your enrolment requirements for a study period, you will be sent an 'incomplete enrolment' email notification to your University student email account.

What happens if you don't complete your enrolment?

If you don’t complete your enrolment by the deadline stated in this notification, your enrolment in the course will be cancelled. A cancellation sanction will be placed on your record, and you'll be withdrawn from your course. The cancellation sanction means that your course has been cancelled and automatically blocks access to your course online, results, library services, and other student support services and facilities.

You will be advised of the cancellation via email, including options to reinstate your enrolment.

FAQS

  • What if I'm waiting on results for the previous study period?

You're still required to complete your enrolment even if you're waiting for finalisation of results, including the outcome of Final Subject Assessment.

If needed, you can update your enrolment by withdrawing from subjects before the census date and/or enrolling in subjects before the last self-enrol date.

Tip: You don't need to wait for your results to be finalised to complete your enrolment. The Study Plan will still allow you to enrol in subsequent subjects even if the result for a prerequisite subject has not yet been finalised.

  • What if I'm waiting on an outcome, such as an application for a new course, quota subject or exchange?

You are still required to complete your enrolment even if you are awaiting the outcome of an application. If you're successful, you can update your enrolment later by withdrawing from subjects before the census date and/or enrolling in subjects before the last self-enrol date.

Types of applications include, but are not limited to:

    • Overseas study programs
    • Quota or application-based subjects
    • Leave of absence or course withdrawal applications
    • Admission to another course
    • Advanced standing (including credit and non-credit exemptions)
    • Reduced Study Load
  • What if there is sanction blocking my enrolment?

If you have a debt or an overdue fees sanction blocking your enrolment, you are expected to resolve it (eg by paying your fees) and complete your enrolment by the deadline.

Students with an unsatisfactory progress sanction can only enrol after this sanction has been removed.

  • What if I'm having difficulties enrolling?

Students are expected to promptly and proactively resolve enrolment difficulties.  Resources are available to support you with this:

  • Can I change my enrolment later?

If you change your mind about your subjects, that's ok. While there are key dates you need to be aware of, you can withdraw from subjects before the census date and/or self-enrol in subjects before the last self-enrol date.

If you want to withdraw from all of your subjects in one or both half-year periods, you have two options:

Check your student email

The University will send important enrolment information to your student email account. Remember that you are required to check your emails at least twice per week, even during periods of leave.
